German Ice Wine
Ice Wine (in German, Eiswein) is a type of dessert wine produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugars and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing for a more concentrated grape that is pressed, resulting in a smaller amount of more concentrated, very sweet wine. With ice wines, the freezing happens before the fermentation, not afterwards. Enjoy it at a temperature of 8°C, too.
Riesling Ice Wine - Heppenheimer Stemmler 2001Vineyard: Bergsträsser WINZER eG Origin: Early Triassic sandstone occurs as geological peculiarity only in a small area in Heppenheim, known as the "Stone head" and the "Schloßberg". The soils are very shallow, permeable and very rocky. Therefore, these locations have a rather low output, but because of their southern exposure almost always outstanding qualities. The Riesling is the King of the Bergstraesser grape varieties. The wine has grown to one of the best locations on the Bergstrasse: in the extremely steep slopes of the South side of the Heppenheimer Schlossberg below the Starkenburg. There, the finest Rieslings grow every year on hot and dry weathered soils of sandstone Awards: In September 2004 the Riesling ice wine of 2001 from the "Heppenheimer Stemmler" received one of a total of just 13 Awards "Grand Gold" from "mundus vini".
